Odonates from north-central Suriname, November 2011:



From November 09 - 16 2011 Sheridan and I were on a birding trip to north-central Suriname, and while there I tried to photograph odonates whenever possible; here are the results:

PART B: the Libellulids/Skimmers:.

11) Erythrodiplax unimaculata per Dennis Paulson; small heavily-vegetated pond just inside small patch of forest near Paramaribo:




12) probably Erythrodiplax unimaculata per Dennis Paulson; same taxon as above? open small creek with reeds near Paramaribo:



13) probably Diastatops pullata per Dennis Paulson; along edge of forested large blackwater creek in white-sand savanna zone:



14) Black Pondhawk Erythemis attala ; semi-open trail within small patch of forest near Paramaribo:

15) Claret Pondhawk Erythemis mithroides ; small heavily-vegetated pond just inside small patch of forest near Paramaribo This form is much smaller than those I've found in south Texas:







16) Red Pondhawk Erythemis haematogastra ; open end of heavily-vegetated ditch inside large patch of forest near Paramaribo (Peperpot):



17) Flame-tailed Pondhawk Erythemis peruviana ; water lilly-choked section of open large roadside ditch (Weg naar Zee):

20A) female Misagria parana ; very small pond hidden inside large area of forest in white-sand savanna:




21) Carmine Skimmer Orthemis discolor ; semi-open trail within small patch of forest near Paramaribo:

22) Libellula herculea per Dennis Paulson - but S.A. form may be split; in small clearing amidst extensive tall primary forest on 400m ridge line (Brownsberg); new for Suriname:

24) Hyacinth Glider Miathyria marcella per Dennis Paulson; below water lilly-choked section of large mostly-open ditch near Paramaribo:



25) Perithemis mooma ; below water lilly-choked section of large mostly-open ditch near Paramaribo; new for Suriname:



26) female Tauriphila sp. prob. australis per Dennis Paulson; scattered woodland in white-sand savanna zone:



27) Garnet Glider Tauriphila australis per Dennis Paulson; water lilly-choked section of open large roadside ditch (Weg naar Zee):
