Odonates from the Andes and foothills of northern Peru, May 2010 :



From May 02 - 19, 2010 Sheridan went on a birding trip to central and northern Peru, and while there I tried to photograph odonates whenever possible; here are the results - part B, the skimmers:

PART B: Libellulids/Skimmers (my thanks to Dennis Paulson for help with some of the IDs):-

12) Male Brechmorhoga sp. ; Quebadra Mishquiyacu south of Moyobamba; on a small clear rocky stream with large boulders within woodland at c. 1100m, eastern foothills of the northern Andes:





13) Female Brechmorhoga sp. flying a feeding pattern over the bank of a medium-size, high-banked river at Juan Guerra, south of Tarapoto, 250m in eastern foothills of the northern Andes:




14) Red-faced Dragonlet Erythrodiplax fusca ; over small pond at Moro de Calzada near Moyobamba; 950m in eastern foothills, northern Andes :




15) Erythrodiplax ines a small, very shallow streamlet flowing through woodland with a small boggy area in a wide trail cut with low regrowth, on the edge of Aguas Verdes, an area of scattered white-sand forest at 1200m in the eastern foothills of the nothern Andes:

28) This male Carmine Skimmer Orthemis discolor was guarding the female above as she oviposited. a small, very shallow streamlet flowing through woodland with a small boggy area in a wide trail cut with low regrowth, on the edge of Aguas Verdes, an area of scattered white-sand forest at 1200m in the eastern foothills of the nothern Andes:



29) male Orthemis sp. (not discolor I feel, due to darker/less red face and eyes, and paler/pinker body - ?) a small, very shallow streamlet flowing through woodland with a small boggy area in a wide trail cut with low regrowth, on the edge of Aguas Verdes, an area of scattered white-sand forest at 1200m in the eastern foothills of the nothern Andes:



30) male Orthemis schmidti in the middle of an open crop field next to a forest remnant at Yacumama Tourist Lodge, 950m, north of Rioja in eastern foothils of northern Andes:



31) Female Orthemis sp ; thorn scrub in middle/lower Maranon Valley near Jaen, c. 850m: northern Peru:






32) Probable Brechmorhoga sp. over an open small flowing roadside ditch (limited low vegetation) on the edge of Aguas Verdes, an area of scattered white-sand forest at 1200m in the eastern foothills of the nothern Andes:



33) Male Perithemis mooma; over small pond at Moro de Calzada near Moyobamba; 950m in eastern foothills, northern Andes:



34) Male Sooty Saddlebags Tramea binotata; over small pond at Moro de Calzada near Moyobamba; 950m in eastern foothills, northern Andes :
