Update May 29, 2009: another (or the same) male at the same spot today - added at the bottom of this page:


This male Vermilion Saddlebags Tramea abdominalis was first seen in flight (among many Red and Striped Saddlebags) working a "beat" next to the benches at the entrance pond at Santa Ana NWR around noon on May 25, 2009; I struggled for 15+ minutes to get any good flight shots - but it then took pity on me and landed for c. 20 seconds! This is the second record for Texas, the first being on June 10, 2005 at exactly the same spot!:
