This male Black Pondhawk Erethemis attala was photographed in the wooded ditch at the NABA Butterfly Garden, near Bentsen SP in Hidalgo county, Texas on May 15 2008; I saw another male c.40 yards further down the ditch:

this female was found at the swampy area on the northwest corner of Bentsen RGVSP-WBC on June 23, 2008; note that on each of abdominal segments 4 - 7 the two dorso-lateral pale patches are separated by a dorsal black central band that is much wider than typical:
