West-central and Northwest Thailand, Feb/March 2016

From February 21 - March 05, 2016, Sheridan, Willie Sekula and I spent fifteen days in the west-central, north-central, and northwest parts of Thailand, expertly led by Dave Sargeant of Chiang Mai.

We visited Pak Thale, Laem Pak Bia, Nong Pla Lai, Kaeng Krachan, Bueng Boraphet, Mai Ping, Doi Inthanon, Mae Taeng, Chiang Dao, Fang, Doi Lang, and Doi Ang Kang.

As usual, the quality varies from very good to rather poor - but identifiable! ______________________- Here are a few mammals that got in the way of my lens!

Ducks - Cotton Pygmy-Goose and Garganey.

Pheasants - Kalij Pheasant; Bar-backed and Scaly-breasted Partridges; Red Junglefowl.

Herons - Purple Heron; Chinese, Great, Intermediate, and Little Egrets; Chinese Pond-Heron; Yellow Bittern.

Asian Openbill and Black-headed Ibis.

Misc. waterbirds - Little Grebe, Indian Cormorant, Oriental Darter, and Grey-headed Swamphen.

Probable Booted Eagle - an unusual intermediate-morph

Other Raptors - Crested Goshawk; Crested Serpent-Eagle; Oriental Honey-Buzzard; Shikra; Black-eared Kite; Brahminy Kite; Black-shouldered Kite; Rufous-winged Buzzard; White-bellied Sea-Eagle.

White-faced Plover - a striking male plus possible female and first-cycle - ?

Malaysian and Kentish Plovers - a male Malaysian plus possible female - ? - also a comparison pic of the local form of Kentish Plover.

other plovers - Grey-headed Lapwing; Pacific Golden-Plover; Little Ringed Plover and Eastern Little Ringed Plover; Greater and Lesser Sand-Plovers.

Jacanas - Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas.

Asian Dowitcher.

Shanks and allies - Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Nordmann's Greenshank, and Terek Sandpiper.

Spoon-billed Sandpiper - what can I say ?!

Calidrids - Great Knot; Long-toed and Red-necked Stints; Pin-tailed Snipe.

Brown-headed Gull - adults.

Steppe Gull? - a possible adult barabensis....

Heuglin's Gull - compare to the putative barabensis....

Pallas' Gull - first-cycle birds.

"crested" terns - [Great] Crested Tern and Lesser Crested Tern.

Common Tern - but what ssp(s) - ?

Little Tern - but what ssp(s) - ?

marsh terns - White-winged Tern and Whiskered Tern.

Cuckoos - Violet, Banded Bay and Plaintive Cuckoos; Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo.

Malkohas - Chestnut-bellied and Green-billed Malkohas.

Asian Barred Owlet.

Cook's Swift.

Bee-eaters, etc - Red-headed and Orange-breasted Trogon; Common Kingfisher; Russet-crowned Green, and Blue-tailed Bee-eaters; Golden-throated, Blue-eared, and Coppersmith Barbets.

Woodpeckers - Black-headed, Freckle-breasted, Grey-capped, and Great Slaty Woodpeckers; Greater Flameback.

Falconets - The World's smallest raptors: Black-thighed and Collared.

Parrots - Grey-headed Parakeet and Vernal Hanging-Parrot.

Broadbills - Long-tailed and Silver-breasted Broadbills.

Minivets and allies - Scarlet and Long-tailed Minivets, and Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrike.

Shrikes - Grey-backed, Long-tailed, and Brown Shrikes; Clicking and Blyth's Shrike-Babblers.

Orioles - Black-naped and Slender-billed.

Drongos - Bronzed, Greater Racket-tailed, and two very different forms of Ashy.

Asian Fairy-Bluebird.

Bulbuls - Crested Finchbill; Black-crested, Striated, Stripe-throated, and Flavescent Bulbuls.

Pygmy Cupwing/Wren-Babbler.

Barn Swallow - but which subspecies?

Warblers - Buff-throated, Chinese Leaf-, Two-barred, and Sulphur-bellied Warblers.

Babblers - Scimitar-Babbler, Babblers, and Fulvettas.

Laughingthrushes - Mesia, Laughingthrushes, Minla, and Sibias.

Parrotbills - Pale-billed and Spot-breasted Parrotbills, plus Whiskered Yuhina and Oriental White-Eye.

Nuthatches - Giant, Chestnut-vented, Burmese, and Velvet-fronted Nuthatches.

Thrushes - Chestnut-bellied Rock-Thrush;Dark-sided, Chestnut, Black-breasted, and Grey-sided Thrushes.

Flycatchers - Large Niltava; Hill and Tickell's Blue-Flycatchers; Little Pied, Rufous-gorgeted, Slaty-backed, Slaty-Blue, Taiga, Ultramarine, White-gorgeted, and Verditer Flycatchers; White-rumped Shama.

Chats - Pied and Grey Bushchats; Stejneger's and Przewalksi's Stonechats.

Chats part 2 - Robins, Redstarts, Bluetail, Rubythroat and Whistling Thrush.

Flowerpeckers & Sunbirds - Yellow-bellied Flowerpecker; Brown-throated, Blue-tailed, Olive-backed, and Gould's Sunbirds.

MISC. SPECIES - Thick-billed Pigeon, Oriental Turtle-Dove, Crested Treeswift, Dollardbird, Great Hornbill, Hill Prinia, Golden-bellied Gertgone, Ashy Woodswallow, Yellow-cheeked Tit, Sultan Tit, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Golden-crested Mynah,Richard's Pipit, and Spot-winged Grosbeak.
