While checking a couple of ponds in the lowlands just west of Cartago (east of El Cairo) we found a small number of Gray Seedeaters Sporophila intermedia feeding in the grasses next to the road; this is the western form that is darker below and more like Slate-colored Seedeater, but lacks that taxon's clean white belly, pale spot on sides of lower throat, and white wing bar (not always present):
