COLOMBIA December 2009

From Dec 06 to 19, 2009, Sheridan Coffey and myself birded the eastern Andes, north coast, and Santa Marta Mtns of Colombia (for the first leg in the Andes, Dan Peak joined us) using Medellin-based birding guide Pablo Flores Valencia click here to email Pablo.

Chestnut-bellied Hummingbird Amazilia castaneiventris: in patchy woodland below Soata (5 hours north of Bogota). We saw 6 - 8 individuals, mostly at this one section of flowering trees along the trail below the town, but including one on the lower section of the Onzaga Road above Soata. NOTE: none of the references that I have been able to check mention that this species has chestnut in the secondaries (similar to some other Amazilia, e.g. Berylline) - yet my photos clearly show this to be the case. Also note the contrasting mottled pale rump that is not mentioned in some descriptions for this taxon:
