COLOMBIA August 2009

The endangered Cauca Guan Penelope perspicax, between La Suiza and El Cedral in Ucumari Regional Park near Pereira. When Hilty and Brown published their "Birds of Colombia" guide in 1986 this taxon was thought to be near to or actually extinct, but soon after the book's publication a few scattered populations were located. The protection afforded to those found in Ucumari Regional Park - which abutts the huge Nevados National Park - since their rediscovery there has lead to a promising increase in that population, and they are regularly seen by visitors:
