Here are some Merlins (Falco columbarius) photographed in Texas; all are from around Fort Worth and all are presumed to be typical of the Prairie race richardsonii, unless stated otherwise:

Males:-
A) is this a very dark Prairie or an intergrade with nominate Taiga? - it was obviously darker about the head than other male Prairies seen locally:

D) from near Marfa, West Texas:

4) This striking individual was very large; note that its prey is a male Brown-headed Cowbird:

5) Taiga race from new New Braunfels:

6) This seems very dark-backed for a Prairie:

7) again rather dark-backed compared to typical Prairie forms seen locally:

8) could this be a lightish Taiga?:
