This King Rail (Rallus elegans) was photographed at the cattail marsh below the levee on the northwestern part of Balmorhea Lake (not the main levee on the east side), Reeves county, Texas in late June or early July 1993. Note especially the whitish belly extending up into the lower breast area (thus a female?) and gray edgings admixed into the upperpart fringes. These are scans of slides, and the lack of image depth in the darker areas precludes making an accurate assessment of the dark areas on the flanks.
