This 1st-alternate Slaty-backed Gull (Larus schistisagus) wase photographed at Nome, Alaska by Tony Leukering on 19th August, 1999. Again there is the impression that the lowest row of scaps sitting above the lesser wing-coverts are darker than the other new mantle/scap feathers (and similar in shade to the new wing coverts):
