This 3rd-cycle LBBG-type gull was at Daytona Beach Shores, FL on February 01, 2010; the cleanly bicolored bill and somewhat lightly-marked head are features associated with heuglini:
P9 and P10 seem to be slightly blacker and have larger white apical spots than P8 - P6, suggesting they might be different ages?:
P9 and P10 seem to be slightly blacker and have larger white apical spots than P8 - P6, suggesting they might be fresher feathers:
- and the mirror on P10 seems too large for a 3rd-generation P10:
it is a fairly large bird for an LBBG-type - about the size of a small-to-medium smith. Herring Gull:
At first glance the flight feathersand their coverts do not look unusual:
- but a closer look suggests that perhaps P1 and P2 are fresher - at least there seem to be missing/newer coverts over these two primaries, which appear very slightly grayer than the adjacent primaries:
- a similar "gap" in the innermost primary coverts is apparent on other wing:
- and in the above/below images there is a suggestion that the outermost 3 secondaries are fresher than the adjacent inner ones; ALSO note below a gap in the underwing innermost primary coverts, matching the apparent gap in the same location on the upperwing:
