This adult-basic presumed smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed by Martin Reid at Brownsville, Texas on January 15, 2001; note the extremely late primary molt (with P7 the longest primary). The orbital ring was orangy-red. I did a careful comparison of the mantle tone with other adult HERGs, and it was similar to all the nearby gulls, thus ruling out vegae. Coincidentally, there was an LBBG nearby that also exhibited extremely late molt:
