This fourth/definitive-basic smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed at Corpus Christi, Texas on January 6, 2001 by Martin Reid; note the pink base and black gonydal smudge on the bill, despite having the large white apical tips of a full adult; also note that P8 is the longest visible primary tip - a very late moult stage for smithsonianus; the mantle tone was similar to other nearby adult birds, yet the orbital ring was orange-red:
