This definitive-basic Herring Gull larus
a. smithsonianus was photographed by Martin Reid at
East Beach, Galveston, Texas on March 23, 1999. In this first
shot notice the very pink base to the otherwise-adult bill:
- but there is something odd about the primaries on this bird:
; it seems to have very ragged primaries (is one missing?), and
in this last image, what is that second small white spot near
the base of the black underside of P10 on the far wing? Keep in
mind that this is in late March.
