Another intriguing Herring Gull photographed
by Martin Reid at La Marque Landfill (near Galveston) Texas on
March 23, 1999. The thick black subterminal band on the bill plus
the relatively small apical tips to the primaries (these are heavily-worn,
but appear much smaller than on other nearby worn adults) lead
me to feel this may be a 4th-basic bird. Note the darker mantle,
white head, sloping forehead, and long neck and legs; how similar
is this individual to argentatus or vegae?:
