This bizarre 1st-Basic presumed smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed at La Marque Race Track, Texas on March 24, 1999 by Martin Reid; I feel it is a new taxon, the Pimple-headed Gull (Larus argentatus minutacephalus). In direct comparison, the head looked slightly smaller than nearby Ring-billed Gulls:

In this 2nd picture the odd bird has its bill slightly open, exaggerating the bill depth; the pale 1B smithsonianus to the left is an extremely small (but normally-proportioned) bird - in fact the smallest HEGU out of c.100 individuals:
