This presumed 1st-Basic smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed at Brownsville
Landfill on Feb 18, 1999 by Martin Reid. Early winter birds can
often look like this, but mid-February is late for such a dark-looking
individual; also note the very plain-looking "greater coverts"
- but have the actual g-cs worn away, and are we looking at the
underlying secondaries?:
