This dark-eyed adult smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed at Corpus
Christi Landfill on Feb 17, 1999 by Martin Reid. It was a smallish
bird inviting thoughts of thayeri, but in flight the wing
pattern looked typical for HEGU; through a telescope the eye color
was seen to be a dark amber (like that on some dark-eyed B2 RBGUs):
