This 2nd-cycle Herring
Gull (Larus argentatus argenteus/argentatus) was
photographed near Dix, Oxon., England on January 17, 2008. Note the strong, smooth dusky "shawl" at the base of the hindneck, identical to that of many smithsonianus. Note also that while the undertail coverts are of the Eurasian type, the chest and belly markings are equivocal, and matched by some smithsonianus in January:
