This 1st-cycle Herring Gull-type was at East Beach, Galveston in early December 2009; note the "Old Word rear-end" - sparse dark barring on undertail and uppertail coverts and rump with some pale at the base of the tail; also note the underparts markings are fairly well-defined rather than "cloudy", and the white barring on the upperwing secondary greater coverts extends out to the outermost such covert:
