This adult-basic large gull was photographed
on the Coastal Plain near Houston, Texas on February 25, 2008; clearly a Vega/Herring/Thayer's type, the raspberry-colored orbital ring and less-than-black outer primary tips fit thayeri, but the extent of black in the primary pattern seems outside the range for pure individuals of that taxon - in particular P9 has way too much black - ?:
