This first-cycle large gull was photographed on the Coastal Plain near Houston, Texas on February 07, 2008; clearly a Herring Gull type, it mostly resembles a western smithsonianus, but the tail pattern seems outside the range for pure individuals of that taxon, and I suspect that this bird has some vegae genes in it (maybe quite a lot!):
