This presumed first-basic smithsonianus Herring Gull was photographed at Corpus
Christi Landfill on January 6, 2001 by Martin Reid; note the very
short tail, the extensive white in the wing-coverts and tertials,
the "V"-shaped patten of some lower scapulars, and the
sparse dark bars in the whitish outermost retrix - all features
seen more often in vegae than in smithsonianus:
