This adult California Gull Larus
californicus was photographed by Greg Lasley at
Port Aransas, Texas on December 03, 1986 - to me there are a
few troubling aspects to this bird: it is barely larger than
nearby RBGUs; the mantle shade is almost identical to nearby
RBGUs; the eye, while darker than adult RBGU, is similar to many
2nd-basic RBGUs - and too pale for CAGU? Also, the primaries
seem unusual, with P8 shorter than P9, and P8 having extensive
gray on the inner web. Update Sept 2000:
Jon King has identified this an albertaensis CAGU - presumably
a very small female?:
