This adult California Gull Larus californicus was photographed by Greg Lasley at Port Aransas, Texas on December 03, 1986 - to me there are a few troubling aspects to this bird: it is barely larger than nearby RBGUs; the mantle shade is almost identical to nearby RBGUs; the eye, while darker than adult RBGU, is similar to many 2nd-basic RBGUs - and too pale for CAGU? Also, the primaries seem unusual, with P8 shorter than P9, and P8 having extensive gray on the inner web. Update Sept 2000: Jon King has identified this an albertaensis CAGU - presumably a very small female?:
