COLOMBIA August 2009

From August 23 to 29, 2009, Sheridan Coffey and myself birded central Colombia using Medellin-based birding guide Pablo Flores Valencia click here to email Pablo.

This Munchique Wood-Wren Henicorhina negreti was at c. 1,900 meters on the west-slope side of the San Jose del Palmar road near El Cairo. It responded to speculative playback of Munchique W-W (H. negreti) with graty churring for a while, then sang a few times - all of us agreed that the song was very like (but not exactly the same as) the pre-recorded clip of Munchique, and thus distinct from Grey-breasted W-W (H. leucophrys - the nominate form supposedly occurs here). Initially I was concerned that the plumage details visible in my poor photos do not match the earlier descriptions of negreti, in that the throat is lightly-streaked, the belly appears to be unstreaked, and there is no sign of white tips to the tail feathers... but newer data from 2010 shows that this individual is within the range of the (presumably more-variable than first thought) negreti:
