BRAZIL November 2008

Pousada Rio Azul has a handful of top-drawer species that are easier to see there than at Cristalino - one of these is the Crimson Topaz Topaza pella. Some five territories had been discovered along a short stretch of the river earlier in the year, so we were hopeful; it did not take long to locate a molting male low over the edge of the Rio Azul:

Much more of a surprise came at Cristalino when Bradley's amazing ears picked out a calling bird along the river; we turned around and chugged back upstream to find a molting female Crimson Topaz - the first documented record for Cristalino:
